The species involved
The swine hookworm is Globocephalus urosubulatus, found in the small intestine. In most herds the dominant intestinal worm is the large roundworm Ascaris suum, with hookworms more likely where pigs have outdoor soil access.
How pigs get infected
- Swallowing or skin-penetration of larvae from soil
- More common in outdoor or deep-litter systems
- Favoured by warm, moist ground
Signs to watch for
Poor growth, rough coat, anemia and diarrhea in heavier infections. Often subclinical, showing up mainly as reduced thrift and feed efficiency.
Treatment & control
Fenbendazole and other broad-spectrum dewormers control hookworms along with the more significant roundworms. Combine treatment with clean, dry housing and good manure management.
