Hookworms are very treatable. Adult worms are cleared with a dewormer; a repeat dose handles the larvae that mature afterward, and severe anemia gets supportive care.
How treatment works
Treatment has two jobs: kill the worms and support the animal while it recovers from blood loss. Dewormers (anthelmintics) paralyze or starve adult worms so the animal passes them. Because most dewormers don't kill immature larvae living in the tissues, a second dose two to four weeks later mops up worms that matured in the meantime. Your veterinarian confirms success with a follow-up fecal test.

Supportive care for severe cases
When anemia is severe — most often in puppies and kittens — killing the worms isn't enough on its own. Your vet may add iron supplementation, fluids, a high-quality diet, and in critical cases a blood transfusion to stabilise the animal while it rebuilds its blood supply.
After treatment
- Give the full course exactly as directed, then the repeat dose on schedule.
- Clean up the environment at the same time — otherwise the animal re-infects itself.
- Return for a follow-up fecal test to confirm the worms are gone.
- Move onto a year-round preventive to keep them gone.
